A good stock market analyst is not just someone who conducts research. You need to be a “people person” as well. Build up strong personal relationships with people you meet along the way, in your internship or in your classes. These people may be useful in providing references for future job applications or links to job opportunities. The key to being a great stock analyst is avoiding the mistakes that average or bad analysts make. These mistakes are made in the decision-making process. The debate has been won as to whether experience, intuition or gut instinct produces better decisions than those based on rigorous, objective analysis. Sell-side analysts, on the other hand, typically work in a transaction-based environment selling their research to the buy-side group, hence their name. A sell-side analyst working for a brokerage firm can cover a group of stocks, industries, sectors, or even entire market segments. One of the most under-rated trait for being a good equity research analyst is patience! Remember haste makes waste. Your customers trust you and will be basing their buy-sell decisions on your recommendations. Take the ratios, numbers, and other information you use the most, and write them all down on a sheet of paper. Make copies, and use this checklist (or "cheat sheet") whenever you analyze a stock.
